We got away for a mini-vacation for the last couple of days. A welcome break from the crazy rat race that is our daily life. I'm kidding!!! Doesn't even feel right to call it a vacation! We're so spoiled!
We headed to Placencia for two days with Peggy and Ed (the neighbours). It's on the southern coast, so it was a leisurely three hour drive. In less time than it takes to drive from Fort Nelson to Fort St John, we can be on the Caribbean! Amazing! That's what it's all about.

Placencia is a popular beach destination with good reason. These are probably the nicest beaches in Belize. The village is a mix of Maya, Creole and Garifuna and is still relatively undeveloped but that is changing quickly. The village is a mix of tiny restaurants, small inns and artsy stores. Of course, August is way off-season so it seemed really, really quiet to us. But I suspect that it's never really busy. It's the kind of place that you can still rent a small cabana directly on the beach for about $60 USD a night. Nice!
We went snokelling with a local operator for a day. It was disappointing. The water was cloudy everywhere that we went, even in the shallow water. One fellow we spoke to in town said that this has been a problem for the last few months. He suspects the BP spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Could very well be. I agree that the damage from that disaster will be felt for many years (or decades) to come. Belizeans recently voted down proposals that would allow for off shore drilling in Belize. Smart people! The coastline and reef system here are irreplaceable.
Adam chillin' on the beach near our hotel. We had the whole beach to ourselves.
