On Saturday we welcomed Jennifer and Darryl Low to Belize! Darryl and I graduated high school together so it can be said that we've know each other for a few years! Just a few!!
I was so thrilled when they decided to come to Belize to visit us. I've said so many times how incredible it is to re-connect with people. Moving to Belize has given that opportunity to us. Really amazing!
So, we met Jen and Darryl on Saturday evening. They actually took a shuttle from Belize City right to San Ignacio. It worked out really well. We had just made the trip to the city a few days earlier to take Mom to the bus so it was nice not to have to go again. It gets to be pretty tedious with as many times as we've made the trip and especially twice in a week!

We took it fairly easy on Sunday to give Jen and Darryl the chance to shake off the travel miles. And we had a yard worker in for the morning. He was clearing the brush along the front fence line...have to keep fighting that jungle back!
After a laid back morning, we made the easy trip to Cahal Pech. This is the Mayan archaeological site that is located right in town. We wandered around for a while and then it was back home for food, drink and pool.

The next day was more old stuff...I mean historic and awe inspiring ancient Mayan cities. We visited Xunantunich in the morning. The weather was perfect with a light cloud cover so it didn't get too hot. We hiked all around the site, spotted howler monkeys, watched a spider monkey enjoying his lunch in the trees and we all made it to the top of the tallest structure, the Castillo. That's only the second time that I've climbed to the top. I can't say that I was overly bold or brave but hey, I made it! The only disappointment was that we didn't hear the howlers. It's one thing to see them but definitely another thing to hear them. For some reason they were quiet when we were there.
After Xunantunich, we picked up some tacos, filled a cooler with beer and more food at home and then we drove out to El Pilar. El Pilar is another Mayan site about eight miles from our house...eight miles that feel like eighty! The road is pretty terrible but it really is worth it. El Pilar is not very excavated so imagination is mandatory! But it's a great hike through a beautiful park setting. We don't make it out there often (because of the crappy road) but it really is a special place.
All in all, a great day. And all the tall, uneven stairs made it a great workout for the calves!

Yesterday was a day around home and town. Time to catch up on some grocery shopping and I wanted to show Jen around town a bit. We had to stop in at the local Scotiabank. Jen is the manager of the Fort Nelson Scotiabank. We explained to one of the clerks why we were there and she introduced us to the manager right away. Very nice!
Today was a day on the river. We rented canoes at the Chaa Creek lodge and floated/paddled our way back to town. It's about a six mile trip that took us just over two hours. On the way home we picked up fried chicken dinners and then it was pool time...are we seeing a pattern here?
I think tomorrow will be a lazy day. I have a feeling that Darryl will be nursing a fairly respectable sunburn! He was a pretty crazy pink (flame red) shade this evening. Thankfully, my aloe vera plants are sacrificing themselves for a good cause!
