Mom is already back home on Vancouver Island but I still have some catching up to do with the blog. On one of Mom's last days here we decided to take a drive into the Black Rock Lodge. It's a jungle resort a few miles from our place. Adam has explored out there on his bike before but I've never been so it was a good adventure.
What a beautiful area! The lodge is located just off the Western Highway, a ways off of the same road that leads to Chaa Creek and duPlooys resorts. The area is called Black Rock because of all the black slate that is (was?) mined in the area.
On the road in we passed through a ranch called Negroman Farms. Very impressive and prosperous looking. Rolling hills dotted with cattle, horses, citrus orchards, and other crops. At one point we stopped so Mom could take pictures of some horses in a pasture. One of the colts that was playing with a stick, trotted right over to see what was going on...soooo cute!

At this picture I feel the need to explain Adam's arm. Although, anyone that has known Adam for a long time knows that this isn't really all that new for him! A few weeks back he was out with the boys. A few quads, a couple motorbikes and a bunch of guys that forgot they aren't twenty anymore and this is what you get! He assures me that is was a very slow motion incident...more of a topple than a crash but in the end he's got two cracks in his elbow and he's in a cast for five weeks. Sighhhhhhh.....
Back to our little trek to Black Rock... we wandered around the resort a bit and then found the restaurant for lunch. We had to first check out the menu and decide if it was in the budget. All good. Actually pretty impressive pricing. Sometimes these higher end resorts have higher end prices, as you would expect but honestly, I was pleasantly surprised. Lunch was great and Mom ended up treating us anyway!
The staff was also so nice. Right away we told them we weren't guests, just locals out for an afternoon drive. They happily told us about the resort and told us that we would be welcome anytime. They even had very nice bird watching equipment set up and the 'bird expert guy' pointed out some really neat birds to us. My mom and I were very interested. The only bird that Adam was concerned about was the chicken in his burger for lunch!
