Adam and I have both been sick with colds for the last couple of weeks. Not a lot of fun but that's life. We're mostly better now but the nagging cough is still hanging on. Adam says that I'm pretty annoying to be around. He's probably right!
Made a quick trip out to Spanish Lookout today to pick up the shelves for the outdoor kitchen. We cut them from plywood and then had them wrapped in galvanized steel. They look great. We aren't putting doors on the cabinets so I wanted the shelves to look good and they do!

On the way to Spanish I saw a toucan along the side of the river. Amazing! I wish that we could see more of them but they like to hang right on the river in the dense trees. Unfortunately, our land is pretty cleared so they don't have a reason to be here. Not that we have any shortage of birds. We have lots of birds but there is something very special about the toucan.
Last week Adam and I stopped at Belize's new wildlife rehabilitation centre. It's one woman's dream to build a clinic for the injured wildlife of Belize. We met with Dr. Isabelle and she kindly toured us around her new clinic. She's done an incredible job. We had some things around the house that we wanted to donate and we offered ourselves to help with any future work bees or projects that she may have planned.

We checked in with Immigration last week and it looks like we only have one more hurdle on our way to official Permanent Residence status. Yay!!! It's not a quick process. So today we got together with Felipe (our neighbour and friend) and he agreed to sign a security bond for us. This basically says that he accepts financial responsibility to send us back to Canada if for some reason we misbehave and get kicked out in the next three years. It has to be signed by a Belizean national and witnessed by a Justice of the Peace. So, we got that done today and we will head back to Immigration on Monday. Fingers are crossed and we should be done! Just have to pay them some money and get a new stamp in the passport.
Having official residency gives us more freedom to move in and out of Belize as we please. When you are here as a visitor, you have to pay a border crossing fee every time that you want to leave the country and it's fairly hefty (about $20CAD each). A resident pays a very small amount (if anything). We live very close to the Guatemala border so we've been anxious to start making little day trips across. Everyone tells us the beer and food are excellent! And it will be fun to explore a new place.
