To throw another twist on this holiday, it is actually Columbus Day in the US and Pan American Day in Belize. Now, I had to do some digging to figure out what Pan American Day is. At first I thought it might be a toned down version of Columbus Day. But quite honestly, that doesn't really make sense. Why would the country of Belize celebrate the travels of a European explore/invader? Especially when that explorer was very much Italian and Belize is very much a Commonwealth country.
The best description of the day that I could find is that it began as a celebration of the migration of the Maya and Mestizos populations from the Yucatan area of Mexico into Belize. They came to Belize to live in peace and be free from persecution. Today it has evolved into a broader recognition of the many cultures that have come together to make Belize. I think I like that explanation best!
But just when I think I've got it, it seems that Pan American Day is celebrated in the rest of Central America on April 14th. I am befuddled!!!!
So, I really have no idea what Pan America Day is and if Belizeans feel any affinity for it. I don't think that there are any parades or celebrations. I think it must be like the August long weekend in Canada. No real significance to the population but it does mean more time to spend with family or collect a little bigger pay cheque!
With that I wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving...Columbus Day...Pan American Day! No turkey for us today...maybe pizza on the BBQ. We can start our own holiday tradition!
