September is a month of celebration in Belize. Officially there are only two stat holidays in the month but somehow the party seems to go on for the whole 30 days! September 10th is the anniversary of the Battle of St George's Caye. This is a holiday to remember the British colonists and slaves that fought off the invading Mexican/Spanish in 1798 and saved Belize for England. And then less than a couple of weeks later, the Belizeans celebrate gaining independence from England. This year is Belize's 30th birthday. Happy Birthday Belize!
There are events all over the country. Parades, contests, sporting events, fireworks and lots and lots of music! We actually went to town a couple of mornings ago to have breakfast and get some shopping done. We got trapped in behind a parade and couldn't go anywhere for over an hour! Turns out it was the day to celebrate youth and patriotism. All the secondary school and college students marched in the streets with bands and waving flags. There are so many kids in this country! The average age in Belize is only 19 years. Everywhere that you go here, there are kids. It really is incredible.
Now we are coming into Independence Day week. The official holiday is on Wednesday but I have a feeling that it will stretch out for the whole week. Happy 30th birthday, Belize!

We've been seeing rain almost everyday lately. No big storms though. We keep a pretty steady eye on the hurricane weather reports but there hasn't been much coming our way. I think that hurricane season is officially over in mid November so we have a while to go yet. Last year Belize was hit fairly hard with Hurricane Richard at the end of October so we'll see.
Less than two weeks and Sheri and Victor (Adam's sister and her husband) will be here. So excited! They are flying to Cancun and then taking a bus to Belize City and we'll pick them up there. We have plans to spend some days on the beach...we're going to visit Ambergris Caye and Placencia. And after that....who knows?! It will be great to just see them!
