Larissa is back home now. Sadly, we put her on the plane a few days ago. It's always such a hard thing to do. I don't think it matters where you live or how old your kids get to be. But I have to remind myself that we probably see her more than we would have if we still lived in Fort Nelson. We have more time. That's what this big change was supposed to be about. Time for the things that really matter in life. So, we had a great visit. And Larissa has so graciously invited Adam and I to come to her place in Red Deer next time and finish her basement! Love that girl!!
Here we are, well into September again. September is a month of celebration in Belize. This year the holiday marks the 31st anniversary of independence from Great Britain. Last year was a really big deal because it was the 30th birthday celebration so I didn't know if this year would be similar. It's still a big deal. Independence Day is marked on the calendar as one day (September 21st) but it really is a month of celebration. Most businesses decorate, the town councils clean up the streets and parks, and banners and flags are everywhere. It's very festive.
When we drove Larissa to the airport on Friday, we got caught up in the Youth parades downtown. Children from different schools march proudly in their school colours, cheering and waving Belizean flags. Belize is definitely a country of young people! The population of Belize is very low, only around 300,000, but the birth rate is very high.
I read somewhere that the average age in Belize is just under 20 years old. Way to make us feel old! It is really nice to see kids everywhere, though. A big change from Canada.
So, once again, Happy Birthday Belize. May you have a prosperous and happy year ahead!
