We are just about winding down another month and year. I looked back at my blog and realized that I didn't really do December proper justice. It actually was a pretty eventful month with lots of things worth mentioning. And yet, for some reason, I didn't mention them! So, it is catch up time.
December is a month of Christmas preparation, just like anywhere. Belize is certainly no exception. I have to say that I was a little surprised by the consumerism. I'm not sure what I expected. The stores stock up on all sorts of toys, gifts, and decorations...just like home. The shelves were just packed. They play Christmas music right from the first of the month in the stores and on the radio.
I made the mistake of heading to the stores on the first Saturday of the month. It was payday and a Saturday before Christmas. I've never seen anything like it here. Consumerism is developing a strong hold on Belize!
Christmas day was spent with friends at Peggy and Ed's place. It was a potluck so we got everyone's very best dish. So delicious! There were well over twenty (maybe thirty!) people there and it was a great time. Interestingly, we met a man from Alberta who lives here now. He used to work for Mobil Oil and he was very familiar with Fort Nelson and the Sierra field. It's a very small world!
Also interestingly, most of the people there were Canadians who are now living here. There are so many Canadian expats in Belize. Of course, we also meet lots of Americans and Europeans but Canadians are well represented here.

And speaking of Canadians in Belize, we had a real treat earlier in the month. A friend from high school, Connie Busat, popped in for a visit! We haven't seen each other for years but thanks to the wonder of Facebook we reconnected. Connie and her husband, Rick, own a house in Belize (Placencia) so they were here for a vacation. They decided to spend a few days in our part of the country so they came by for a visit. It was so much fun! Connie's kids and their boyfriend/girlfriends joined them. It was a really great evening. Next time we'll try to join them in Placencia!
