We've all seen it happen. People who are usually vibrant, contributing members of society, always have something interesting to add to any conversation, articulate and insightful. Get these people talking about their pets and things just get sort of weird. The funny thing is we all say we think it's weird but come on, I think we've all had moments where we prefer the company of Lil' Fido or Fluffly the Cat to any human being. And if you haven't felt that way, well there is just something wrong with you!
So having said that, I am giving myself permission to gush over my pets...for a little bit, anyway! Milo is my little mama's boy. He is a seven year old chihuahua - toy poodle cross. He actually started as Larissa's dog but she moved away to school and wasn't able to take him. When we made the plan to move to Belize it was amicably decided that he would come with us. OK, maybe not totally 'amicably' but at least we didn't have to get lawyers involved!

Milo has adapted so well to Belize. His chihuahua blood probably helps. Before we left Canada we had to get him loaded up with all the shots required for his international health certificate. There are so many things that we just didn't have to worry about in northern Canada. Here, we are constantly waging war against ticks, fleas, and other nasty parasites. Not to mention snakes and poisonous toads. It all sounds kind of daunting but once we had the routine figured out it really isn't such a big deal. But just in case, the vet is on speed dial!
Zoey is Adam's dog. She is a 2-1/2 year old, 110lb german shepherd pup. She is absolutely full of life and enthusiasm. That's my kind way of saying she is a cocky, overbearing b*%$#! Don't get me wrong...I love Zoey. She is beautiful, a wonderful watch dog and loyal like no other dog we've ever had. But wow...sometimes she is just so 'Zoey'!!! I don't know how else to say it.
We got Zoey here in Belize. She comes from a line of guard dogs at a very well known local resort, Chaa Creek. The security manager at Chaa Creek maintains a kennel to raise and train guard dogs for the resort. This is the resort that Prince Harry stayed at last year so they must be doing something right. Every once in a while they put a litter of pups up for sale and that's how we ended up with Zoey.

Pet ownership is a responsibility anywhere but you have to be extra vigilant in the tropics. It takes commitment to raise healthy and happy dogs here. It's my biggest gripe about life here. I see so many starving, wounded, over-bred, and homeless dogs and cats here. It's heart breaking. On the positive side there are people doing amazing work with Humane Societies in some communities. Their focus is education and low cost spay/neuter clinics. Such important work.
