Hot...so hot June 20, 2012
Byron and Julio hard at work.
I'm sure that this will make Larissa crazy. The whole month that I was in Red Deer, I complained about how cold I was. There were a few days, in the middle of the day when the sun came out, that I could feel my core thawing but for the most part I was frozen! OK...I'm past that now. It is summer in Central America. So hot and so humid! We are starting to see some rain which is nice and more clouds than usual. And of course, the absolute saving grace...the swimming pool. Until today, I was starting to think that it wasn't so bad. That maybe I was adapting to the weather here and finally becoming Belizean. I was wrong. The pool just fooled me into thinking I was getting used to the heat and humidity! But if I can't handle the cold of Red Deer in May or the heat of Belize in June...where do I belong?
Today was a big day on the patio work. Adam and I have been fussing with the measurements and setting up all the scree boards for the last week. It was lots of nit picky work with the transit level and string. Yesterday we declared that part of the job done and today we called in some help. So we have three guys, Johnny, Julio, and Byron bringing in all the base material and packing it to the right level. What a great day. Sometimes it feels like we are making little or no progress and then we have a day like today. Huge step forward. Tomorrow, we have to head to Belmopan to visit the kind folks at Immigration but we should be laying pavers on Thursday! I think we'll get the guys back for the day. Many hands make light work....or something like that!
One of these days (weeks?) soon, I hope that I am writing about laying around on my patio, cooling off with dips in the pool and watching the plants grow. Soon....soon...

Back home again June 10, 2012
Baby Milo loves his pool toy...NOT! He barely tolerates me some days!
Well, I've been home for just about a week. First couple of days I felt a little sad and displaced. I miss my daughter. But we had a great visit and it was time to get back to Belize and Adam and Milo and Zoey. I was missed!
Big news!!! The pool is done and I finally got to swim in it! I spent a huge part of my first day home in the water. And like a tourist, I got a major sunburn! Felt pretty stupid...I know better. Oh well, the next day I had on lots of sunscreen and my really, goofy looking straw hat. And then I spent a huge part of another day in the pool!

And, while the pool may be done, we are still a long ways from the finish line of this project. Adam worked hard on the landscaping and such while I was away. The retaining wall is built and the area is 'rough leveled' for the pavers. Now it's time to bring in the final packing material and sand and then finally start putting pavers down. All 5000 of them! It's going to be a big job. This is a job that we are going to tackle ourselves. It's a lot of work but we're really tired of having work crews in the yard. It may take us a while but we can still have peace and privacy while we are working on it.
The rains have started again. Sort of. Rainy season isn't quite what you think. We don't see days and days of rain. It's just that we see rain. That's opposed to the no-rain that we've seen for the last four or five months. Everything is so green and flowers are blooming everywhere. I can't believe the difference in the month that I've been away. So beautiful! |
I'm really looking forward to the part of the yard project that I get to go to the nursery for plants! It's still a ways away but I can dream about it! We'll surround the whole pool and patio area with lush, tropical plants. I want lots of green and lots of flowers. Then we can plunk a couple of lounge chairs down, add some shade with a pergola, and bring on the rum punch. I love to imagine the day that we can finally relax and enjoy without being surrounded by reminders of the next part of the project that we have to do. Oh well, we have no one to blame but ourselves. Is it too late to move to a nice maintenance-free condo??
