Here we are, into December. December 2012 that is! (Insert ominous and eerie music.) So, if as predicted by every Negative Nellie on the planet, the world will cease to exist on December 21st. It's what the Mayans said, right? That may not be a completely accurate interpretation but it does make for a great month of doomsday television!
And it has generated some great publicity for the tourism industries of Central America. Visitor stats are way up for Belize for this past year (although I think a lot of that can be attributed to our many guests!) and hotel and tour operators are very optimistic for the rest of this season.

They are just finishing up the new Tourist Info Centre in town. This is part of the Sustainable Tourism Project across the country. I have to say, there are some really nice things going on. They are building a new pier at Placencia, a new washroom facility at the ATM cave, a new ferry at Xunantunich, and an upgrade to the waterfront in Belize City. I know that this doesn't mean a lot to many of you reading this blog but it's really nice for us to see the improvements. So much potential here!
I'm going to take the same stand as the government of Belize, and assume that the world is not going to end on December 21st. So, I have put out the Christmas decorations and am working on some holiday baking. Just on the off chance that we do actually have a Christmas this year...I want to be ready!
I made the terrible mistake of going shopping last Saturday afternoon. Hello...the fist Saturday of December! It was just like West Edmonton Mall! Maybe I exaggerate a little bit (my tolerance for crowds is at an all time low) but the stores were packed. All the shelves are full of toys, gifts, and decorations. And Christmas music played everywhere. I saw what I have to say is the tackiest Christmas tree ever. It is at a local corner grocery store. I will try to sneak a picture and post it later. It is awesome!
