We are starting off our new year in the best way possible... with people that we love. Sheri and Victor arrived for a visit on December 29th. They flew to Cancun and then took the bus to the Belize border where we drove to meet them. Made for a long day for everyone but well worth it.
On an interesting side note, when we drove to the border we had a little time to kill in Corozal. We've been back a few times since moving from there in 2011 but we didn't really look around. This time we stopped for lunch and took a little drive. It was so quiet! I think we have gotten used to the hustle and bustle of San Ignacio. Things are so busy here and always changing. Different, for sure!

Day one was mostly spent chillin' at home. We toured around town a bit and did some shopping. Sheri and I checked out the new Town Square and all the improvements in downtown San Ignacio. Adam and Victor bought beer and settled in at home!
This is a picture of my second new painting! Adam gave me a beautiful frog painting for Christmas and I think he may have started something. This year Victor got my name in the family Christmas present draw. Lucky me! Like a spoiled little kid I 'hinted' that another painting would be a lovely present for a wonderful sister-in-law such as myself. I'm so lucky! Thanks, Victor!

After our 'travel recovery day' we decided that we would visit the nearby Maya ruins of Xunantunich. Last year when Sheri and Victor were here the site was closed because of high rainfall. It was so perfect. We decided to pick up a guide and try to learn something. Edgar (our guide) was great and gave our visit a whole different dimension. We learned lots and he went out of the way to get us a great show with the howler monkeys. This was the first time Victor and Sheri have seen (and heard!) the monkeys and I don't think that they were disappointed!
The next day we spent on the river. Adam and I have been wanting to canoe the Macal river since we moved here. Yesterday was finally the day! In the morning we drove out to a lodge on the Macal river...about 20 minutes from our place. We met up with a guide and got our canoes and equipment. You don't actually need to hire the guide but since it was our first time we decided to play it safe. When (not 'if') we do it again we will just rent the canoes and go by ourselves. It was a beautiful and gentle float down the river for about 2-1/2 hours. We spotted lots of iguanas and birds along the way. And then, once we got back to town, the hotel shuttle picked us up and took us back to our truck.
After our excursion down the river and the drive back to the truck we decided to relax at the resort bar with a fruity drink (or two). A fruity drink with about about four shots of rum in it! So, that was when Tipsy Mona and Tipsy Sheri decided to visit the onsite butterfly farm. We narrowly missed making fools of ourselves (not a story for the blog!). Conclusion for the day... butterfly farms are much more fun after a few fruity drinks!
