Canada Day was well celebrated in Belize this year. It's been a few months since we've had a 'gathering' so Adam and I decided that Canada Day was the perfect excuse to get friends together. Actually, it was my friend Peggy and me that hatched the idea but Adam and her hubby Ed went along for the ride! So, we called together a bunch of Canadians and we gave honourary citizenship to our non-Canadian friends and we bar-b-qued and pot lucked in proper Canadian fashion!
We liberally threw around the 'eh's', 'aboot's' (about) and I even found a reason to say 'zed'. Although, I have to say that I'm pretty sure that I've never said 'aboot' instead of about but apparently that is a stereotype that the world has 'aboot' Canada so we had some fun with it!
We had a heated discussion about which country had claim to Justin Beiber. Turns out the Americans don't really want him either...go figure! It's fun to make a little fun of our Canadianism's! We talked about Bob and Doug Mackenzie, Anne Murray, and hockey...of course hockey!
Living abroad has made me more aware of how the world sees us as a people and a nation. It's true that we are pretty well received. After all we are Canadian! We are polite, accommodating, apologetic and all 'round, generally happy people. And all in all we throw a real good party!
