A beautiful property in Cayo.
We are getting close to the end of our stay in Corozal. We have our little house on stilts until the end of March and then we have to find a new home. It's been great here and we couldn't ask for better neighbours...Donna and Jeannie! But with that in mind...we made a trip to the Cayo district last week for a couple of days.
We've decided that our next home will be in the western part of the county. Somewhere in the area around the town of San Ignacio. San Ignacio is a busy town that is the centre of inland tourism in Belize. This is the place that you start the adventure tours...caving, river tubing, rafting, horseback riding and is close to lots of major Mayan archaeological sites. It's very busy and happening place. Big change from sleepy Corozal!
We spent a couple of days with a real estate agent and saw quite a few homes and pieces of land. We're still on the fence about building vs. buying a house ready built. We'll see.. But for now, we know that this area is beautiful!! Lots of hills (OK, they call them mountains...but please, we come from the Northern Rockies...we know mountains!!). It was a good trip and gave us a chance to feel the area out.
On the way back we stopped at the Belize Federal Prison. It's the only one in the country and they have a gift shop. So, of course, we stopped! Everything in the shop is made by the prisoners as part of a trades training program. The proceeds go back to buy more supplies to keep the program going. We saw a great chair for a great price. We asked the clerk about having one custom built and he told us to come back during the week. Then we could meet with the prisoner that builds the chairs and we could get a tour of the prison workshop. Adam asked the obvious question...'If we go in, can we come out?' Very good question! The clerk laughed so hard that he actually jumped in the air!! I think that means we could come out again. We're going to plan a trip back in the next couple of weeks! If my blog ends abruptly...someone please check the Belize Prison system for me!!!
