It's the middle of May and I have to say that I'm anxious for the month to be over. June 1st marks the official start of the rainy season and this dry season thing is definitely getting old! Our last measurable rain was at the end of January. Although, I seriously doubt that Mother Nature will oblige by opening up the skies simply because we turn the page on the calendar. But there has to be rain in our future somewhere...right????
My yard looks dismal. Most of the plants are completely devoid of leaves or they are all limp and draggy. It's really quite sad. I've actually started watering the younger ones. I usually take the stand that any plant of mine has to be tough enough to make it on it's own but this is just getting to be too much. And I have a lot of time and money invested so I'm dragging the hose around a couple of times a week. Hopefully it will be enough to hold them until we see rain. The ground is so dry that I can't even get the water to puddle. It disappears straight into the dirt!

Funny thing is that there are some plants that are just thriving in this drought. We have a tree in the yard that looks like a scraggly haunted house tree most of the year. Right now it is full with fresh green leaves and beautiful, flowing bunches of yellow flowers. The bougainvillea are at their flowering peak. So pretty! And the flamboyant trees are filling with colour all over the country. Flamboyants are huge trees so they really stand out amoungst all the dry and dead looking foliage. Beautiful splashes of colour on a pretty drab backdrop.
We're still working on the house/yard but the pace is much slower in this hot weather. The big project is the shade pergola over the patio. The patio is almost useless this time of year...too much sun and too hot. So a shade structure is essential. The trusses are all built so I was painting this morning. Not too much longer and we'll have some in place. Hopefully, by the time that we put the roof on, it will also be to keep the rain off our heads...not just the sun!
